The In-Between Place

The port ruin is a building that connects the Puente de la Mujer (bridge) to the Parque Mujeres. The proposal intends to revive it as an important civic space again.

The horizontal platform that goes all the way to Parque Mujeres is quintessential to the proposal. It links the building to the park and serves as an outdoor arena with a view toward the park. The port ruin is thus envisioned a new cultural and social space by creating meaningful connections between the public spots of the dock area and the Parque Mujeres while retaining its ability to blend in with its context.

The proposal also comprises a multi-purpose event space; an art gallery that doubles as a cafeteria with panoramic city views; and an open-to-sky terrace. Different programmatic volumes are stacked and organised around half-cut silos while the café is placed beneath the extended platform. This frees up the ground level for various public programmes and cultural events.

The silos’ re-imagined urban scale straddles and balances the scales of the building and the city block. Their location and size define the edge of the city and activate it as communal space for outdoor activities and gatherings. The proposal conforms to its context by focusing on the silos’ expression as containers for new programmatic additions.

The port ruin then extends beyond a mere a façade; it envelops new life where the in between spaces manifest as live forms; of connectivity, physical presence and meaningful pauses.
