The Stone and the Feather
Kansas City, USA
2024

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is an ensemble of contrasts. The stately Beaux-Arts building of 1933 — the ‘Temple to the Arts’ — meets the translucent, fragmented forms of Steven Holl’s Bloch Building along the campus’s eastern edge. The two structures pursue almost contradictory explorations of how art is experienced — shifting from monumental proportions and ornate façades to fragments that embody light, from art that is revered to art that belongs to everyone.
Between the solid stone and the ethereal feather lies a threshold. The proposal occupies this liminal ground to tie the ensemble together — not as a third object asserting its presence, but as connective tissue drawn across the park. Linear fragments trace the edges of the sculpture garden, weaving building and landscape together and extending the campus’s gradient from opaque to translucent to transparent. Held between these edges, the garden remains the heart of the composition — an open ground for encounter and pause.
Within this transitional territory, viewer and artwork enter a reciprocal exchange; the boundary between self and surroundings becomes ambiguous, and the relationship between observer and exhibit is reversed. Lines of continuity and discontinuity read the intervention as movement — a journey across the park, above and below ground. A curated sequence of experiences connects the polarities of the campus, and the expansion acts as a mediator, adapting and transforming as required so that the ensemble becomes far greater than the sum of its parts – a museum for all.
