MADe is an architectural practice founded in 2007, working from India and Spain through a settled network of collaborators — architects, landscape architects, graphic artists and researchers — across several countries. The practice works almost exclusively through open international competitions for public buildings and public spaces: museums, cultural centres, libraries, schools and civic halls. It holds to the competition as one of the few remaining arenas where architecture is argued on its merits, openly and against all comers.

The work is made collectively. A small, stable group has worked together for over a decade, in a process that values conversation over authorship and doubt over certainty: ideas are catalogued, weighed and discarded until a single proposition remains, and drawings are few and deliberate. Much of the resulting body of work is unrealised — a condition the practice regards not as failure but as a form of research: propositions held in reserve for the city.

Across geographies as different as Suncheon, Geneva, Carthage and Delhi, the projects return to a small set of preoccupations — the void as the centre of the architectural argument, thresholds that mediate rather than divide, and buildings that give ground, sometimes literally, to public life. The Suncheon Art Platform, completed in 2021 and honoured with the Korea Space Culture Award, is the most fully realised statement of these ideas. The exhibitions and writings gathered here are the practice thinking aloud about the rest.
