Void within Mass

The transformation of the Peklo Cultural Centre harmonises historical and contemporary elements. At its heart is a public square above underground car parking – a garden forecourt and cultural promenade that reconnects the city, the cultural complex and Kilometrovka Park: an urban buffer and a space for public gathering.
A modest new structure replaces a structurally unsound link, aligning with the historic buildings through careful proportion and consistent materials. The internal reorganisation strengthens public functions, notably the Main Hall, and enables fluid movement through the complex. Thick masonry for thermal inertia, natural ventilation, solar panels and rainwater harvesting are integral to the design.
The project fosters a quiet dialogue between architectural periods, allowing the cultural centre to retain its symbolic and civic significance while adapting to new needs — preservation and evolution held in balance.
